Best expression when selling prize

Best Expression when Selling Prize, 2008
317 printed video stills on 7 shelves with sound
and 2 library stools.

This work is a documentation of a performance event that took place at the Silk market in Beijing, China. The event was a competition to crown the sales person with the greatest amount of expression when bargaining and selling. The seven participants agreed to be filmed during the transaction. The video documentation was then analysed to pick the best expression of each participant, while a commentary was created describing each performance.

The final piece is then displayed as a graph (see below) made out of 317 printed video stills on shelves and a sound piece containing the commentary relating to each performance. The narration of the sound piece is analytical and uses a television commentary style and technical acting terms. This piece is not only a documentation of a performance but also sets a platform for a new performance this time with the audience as performers.

The wireless headphones are for the audience to listen to while looking at the pictures that stand freely to be handled and looked at up close (hence the library stools required).
